New Zealanders go there in all seasons and even during the end of the year holidays. It is also a popular spot for backpackers who often put it on their itinerary. Its splendid waterfront is great for surfing and swimming, and the peak that dominates it is an icon in the landscape, which can be conquered for a magnificent view. This extinct volcanic cone, located at the very end of the peninsula, was once used as a pa (fortified village) by the Maori tribes. Its name comes from mauao which means "caught by the dawn". Legend has it that, heartbroken by a heartbreak, the mountain asked the people of the night to take her to the sea to drown her. Upon arrival at the ocean's edge, the sun rose and chased away the spirits that left her there.
